Writing in the Modern Age 2018 Year in Review
Hi, everyone! For our 472nd post, I’d like to take a moment to offer an overview regarding some of our blog’s events during the year.
Since its guest inception in 2013, Writing in the Modern Age has taken on a real life of its own! What began as a haven for writers at any stage of their careers to seek out advice and encouragement in their endeavors has also evolved into a place where readers can potentially find their new favorite author in any genre. We still offer writing tips, of course, but through interviews (author or character), special blog events and our Author’s Bookshelf Feature, readers can discover ever more about the authors and books featured on the blog. With 55 posts this year and nearly 70 participating authors, I’d say we’ve accomplished a lot!
Thank you all so much for visiting the blog in 2018, whether as loyal followers or newcomers! It was such a pleasure to have you here!
Also, many thanks to our great writers, service companies, and talented authors who wrote guest posts, visited in interviews, or participated in giveaways and book features!
Below I am including information about all the guests or authors featured in 2018. Each author/guest blogger will be listed with a link to the most relevant site or page to discover more information about their work. You’ll also find each author’s latest book cover, as well as his or her location in the world. What reader hasn’t wondered where his or her favorite author calls home? The covers will be accompanied by a purchase link. Additionally, I will add links to the blog posts in which each individual contributed this year. You can view any posts you might’ve missed!
Sound good? Awesome, let’s get started. ;)
Without further ado, here are our guests from 2018!

Writing in the Modern Age 2017 Year in Review
For our 416th post, I’d like to take a moment to offer a flashback of sorts regarding some of our blog’s events.
Since its guest author launch in 2013, Writing in the Modern Age has taken on an exciting life of its own! I can’t thank our guest writers, published authors and blog readers enough for seeing us through all those great changes! What began as a potential haven for writers at any stage to seek encouragement and advice in their careers has evolved into a fun place for readers of any book genre to find their new favorite author. And, of course, writers at any stage of their careers can still find great writing tips!
So, what did occur this year? Let me tell you...
We had multiple interviews, both with authors and characters (shocking – we had one with a kitty!), some great guest posts about author journeys, with writers providing advice, as well as poetry spotlights, book and blog tour features, an Author’s Bookshelf feature or two, and a few big book giveaways hosted on the blog. This year, we got to celebrate our 400th Anniversary post with a great giveaway, in which multiple authors donated their books. We had almost 1200 views on that post alone! Yay! :) With well over 60 posts this year and 100 participating authors, I’d say we’ve done rather well!
In 2017, we had a wonderful start with women’s fiction author Rita Plush’s great guest post at the onset of the year, to Chelsea Quinn Yarbo’s spotlight on a cool character from her paranormal historical mystery novel, and Alistair Cross’s interview regarding his dark fantasy novel, to Branka Ĉubrilo’s complex writing journey with one of her latest novels, all the way to a feature on Diane Merrill Wigginton’s Jeweled Dagger Series, and a couple book features for Beverley Oakley (not to mention three new articles by yours truly). So much has happened!
Again, thank you all so much for visiting the blog this year, whether you’re a loyal follower or a newcomer, you guested on the blog (see our ‘blog policy’, which offers more information about contributing if you’re a writer), or just simply stumbled across our site from social media. We’d like to offer you a load of gratitude from the bottom of our hearts!
Also, many thanks to our great writers and talented authors who wrote posts, or participated in interviews and giveaways!
Below I am including information about all the authors who were featured in 2017, either in an interview, article, book giveaway or other spotlight. Each author or guest blogger will be listed with a link to the most relevant website to find out more information about their books or writing. You’ll also see each individual author’s latest book cover, as well as his or her location in the world. For what reader hasn’t wondered where his or her favorite author comes from? Readers, I hope you enjoyed our list this year. Authors and writers, once again, thanks for making Writing in the Modern Age awesome in 2017! We really appreciate your support and wish you tons of happiness and success! Here’s to a wonderful 2018, a time of beginnings. Tomorrow is a new day, a way to turn the page on this life, so let’s make the best of it.
Happy New Year, everyone!
And, as always, happy reading! :)
Writing in the Modern Age 2016 Year in Review
For our 354th post, I’d like to take a moment to offer a flashback of sorts regarding some of our blog’s events.
Since its guest author launch in 2013, Writing in the Modern Age has taken on an exciting life of its own! I can’t thank our guest writers, published authors and blog readers enough for seeing us through all those great changes! What began as a potential haven for writers at any stage to seek encouragement and advice in their careers has evolved into a fun place for readers of any book genre to find their new, favorite author.
So, what did occur this year? Let me tell you.
We had two book giveaways, introduced a new Author’s Bookshelf feature, discovered some service interviews, as well as our big 350th Anniversary multi-author writing process post. This was on top of our revolving author and character interviews, and even more poetry spotlights and new release features in 2016. With over 70 posts this year and 120 participating authors, I’d say we’ve done rather well! Starting with fantasy author Arie Farnam’s interview at the beginning of the year, to DJ Swykert’s tips about incorporating forensics into mystery writing, and Carl R. Brush’s great lessons in using the past in fiction, to Heidi Renee Mason’s fascinating poetry spotlight, all the way to Diana Rubino’s illustration of the difference between small and large presses, and Susanne Matthews giving us a look at how to effectively write a trilogy, (not to mention a few new articles by yours truly), so much has happened!
Again, thank you all so much for visiting the blog this year, whether you’re a loyal follower or a newcomer, you guested on the blog (see our blog policy, which offers more information about contributing if you’re a writer), or just simply stumbled across our site from social media. We’d like to offer you a load of gratitude from the bottom of our hearts!
Also, many thanks to our great writers and talented authors who wrote posts, or participated in interviews and giveaways!
Below I am including information about all the authors who were featured in 2016, either in an interview, article, book giveaway or other event. Each author will be listed with a link to the most relevant website to find out more information about their books or writing. You’ll also see each individual author’s latest book cover, as well as his or her location in the world. For what reader hasn’t wondered where his or her favorite author comes from? Each cover will include an updated link to a purchase page. Additionally, I’m including a link or links to the post each author contributed to this year. That way, you can catch any posts you may have missed!

Readers, I hope you enjoyed our list this year. Authors and writers, once again, thanks for making Writing in the Modern Age awesome in 2016! We really appreciate your support and wish you tons of success!
Here’s to a wonderful 2017, a time of beginnings. Tomorrow is a new day, a way to turn the page on this life, so let’s make the best of it.
Happy New Year, everyone!
And, as always, happy reading! :)
We're bringing something a bit different to Writing in the Modern Age today. Awhile back, I had an idea for a new feature so I reached out to some author colleagues to see if they'd like to participate. I thought it might be nice to show readers a few books that have inspired authors. You might find it enlightening, and at least be able to answer the age old question, "What the heck do authors read?"Writers are readers too! Most authors love to collect books for their vast personal libraries. The written word is fascinating to us, and many newer authors as well as those in the past have helped to shape who we are today.Without further ado, our guest today is Isobelle Cate, an adult fiction author and writer of all kinds of romance. Won't it be interesting to hear about a few books that have inspired Isobelle on her writing and publishing journey?Sounds pretty awesome to me. So, take it away, Isobelle! For a writer to be inspired, she looks at the world around her. She gains inspiration when she sees something that catches her eye, she smells a scent that brings back a memory, she listens to a song. She reads.Reading is perhaps the most important source of inspiration for other writers. Just look at the plethora of paranormal novels – romance or otherwise – that lift situations from mythology, from news events, from poetry or from urban legends to name a few. I am no different. My books are inspired by other stories that I have read and the mythology that I grew up with. The characteristics which I infuse my characters with come from the ideal that I have formed from all of these sources. Here are some of the books that have inspired me.1. The Prophet by Khalil GibranBlurb:This is Khalil Gibran’s best and most powerful work ever-written…. Blending the elements of Eastern and Western mysticism, Lebanese – American essayist – Khalil Gibran, in this enriching collection of parables expounds the philosophy of living conveying a strong and beautiful message on every aspect of life. Set forth in the form of profound wisdom and philosophy of life, these discourses apply dynamically with amazing timeliness to our human problems in day-to-day life. Millions of followers today absorb Gibran’s writings with religious devotion and fervor because his thoughts are ageless and realistic.Isobelle's Thoughts:A beautiful poem, The Prophet helped me decide what attributes I wanted for my characters.2. The Scanguards Series by Tina FolsomBlurb:
From Book 1: NEW YORK TIMES & USA TODAY Bestselling Author Tina Folsom presents: Samson's Lovely Mortal (Scanguards Vampires Series #1)
Vampire bachelor Samson can't get it up anymore. Not even his shrink can help him. That changes when the lovely mortal auditor Delilah tumbles into his arms after a seemingly random attack. Suddenly there's nothing wrong with his hydraulics - that is, as long as Delilah is the woman in his arms. His scruples about taking Delilah to bed vanish when his shrink suggests it's the only way to cure his problem. Thinking all he needs is one night with her, Samson indulges in a night of pleasure and passion. However, another attack on Delilah and a dead body later, and Samson has his hands full: not only with trying to hide the fact he's a vampire, but also with finding out what secrets Delilah harbors for somebody to want her harm. "I'm addicted to Tina Folsom's books! The Scanguards series is one of the hottest things to happen to vampire romance. If you love scorching, fast-paced reads, don't miss this thrilling series!" --- Lara Adrian, New York Times Bestselling Author of the Midnight Breed series Scanguards Vampires (Vampire Series):
Book 1: Samson's Lovely Mortal
Book 2: Amaury's Hellion Book 3: Gabriel's Mate Book 4: Yvette's Haven Book 5: Zane's Redemption Book 6: Quinn's Undying Rose Book 7: Oliver's Hunger Book 8: Thomas's Choice Book 8 1/2: Silent Bite (A Scanguards Wedding Novella) Book 9: Cain's Identity Book 10: Luther's Return Novella: Mortal Wish Book 11: Blake's Pursuit (Winter 2015/Spring 2016) ...and more to come... The Scanguards Vampires series is nothing like the Vampire Diaries, Vampire Academy, Shades of Vampire, or Twilight. It's a vampire romance series for adults who like their vampires with a bit of bite--and a lot of hotness! This vampire series takes place in San Francisco. Isobelle's Thoughts:This series started me writing about vampires. The Scanguards are as sexy as any vampire can get!3. The Highlander Series by Donna GrantBlurb:
The Dark Sword Series, The Complete Collection contains Dangerous Highlander, Forbidden Highlander, Wicked Highlander, Untamed Highlander, Shadow Highlander, and Darkest Highlander. In the acclaimed Dark Sword series, the darkest, fiercest warriors of Scottish legend finally meet their match—in the brave, fiery hearts of the women they cherish…
Isobelle's Thoughts:A fantastic series about immortals, Ms. Grant’s books will bring the reader right inside the story. Very addictive! 4. The Masters of the Tabu Series by Gray DixonBlurb:
The Masters of Tabu are seven novel length stories and center around six college friends from Texas plus a new friend brought into the circle. Ten years after graduating from Texas A&M with graduate degrees, each is a master in their own right, and not just academically. Every man is successful in his own business or endeavor and all are co-owners in Club Tabu, a BDSM private club on the outskirts of Dallas.
Their stories take the reader on a journey of discovery, redemption, healing and finding love when they least expect it. The Big D has more than hot days, but sizzling nights. Dallas will never be the same. Isobelle's Thoughts:Because these books are hot, steamy reads!Blurb:
Discover the Difference Between a So-So Manuscript and a Novel Readers Can't Forget
We've all read them: novels by our favorite authors that disappoint. Uninspired and lifeless, we wonder what happened. Was the author in a hurry? Did she have a bad year? Has he lost interest altogether? Something similar is true of a great many unpublished manuscripts. They are okay stories that never take flight. They don't grip the imagination, let alone the heart. They merit only a shrug and a polite dismissal by agents and editors. It doesn't have to be that way. In The Fire in Fiction, successful literary agent and author Donald Maass shows you not only how to infuse your story with deep conviction and fiery passion, but how to do it over and over again. The book features:
Tap into The Fire in Fiction, and supercharge your story with originality and spark! Isobelle's Thoughts:A very good book for writers about principles of writing. This is my writing bible.
